Clisshold Leisure Centre,
London Borough of Hackney
Clissold Leisure Centre comprises a 25 × 17 m competition pool with spectator seating, a 25 × 13m teaching pool, introduction to water area and a sports hall. It also contains a health spa, a fitness centre, two squash courts, a creche and support accommodation. It represents an attempt to synthesise a sustainable sports centre, and one which has an urban responsiveness acting as a catalyst for localised regeneration.
It is a cruciform shaped, concrete framed building enclosed within a clear span steel framed, glass and aluminium clad envelope. The two forms define the support accommodation and perfor ance areas respectively. The concourse is an extension of a new external public space between the sports centre and an adjacent school. From here all performance areas, apart from the teaching pool, may be seen, thereby offering clear orientation within the building.
A café bar in the concourse, together with the creche, may be used by non participating public. The sports hall and plant room areas are at basement level thereby reducing the apparent mass to adjacent housing. Two squash courts and spectator seating are at mezzanine level. The fitness centre is at first floor level.
The aluminium roof glistens in sunlight and reflects through the clerestory windows. The purpose made extended arms on the curtain walling cappings pick up external louvres, whilst the shadows cast by the profiled extrusions reduce the scale of the system and reduce specular reflection on the water.
